Getting Back to the Hotel

Whenever you check-in to a hotel or a hostel, remember to take a business card and stick it in your wallet.  If you’re in a cab trying to get back, it’ll be much easier to just give the card to the driver vs. trying to describe the way back, especially through streets where you’re unfamiliar.  This is especially handy if you’re in a country where you don’t speak or read the language.  At the very least, the driver will be able to radio someone who is familiar with where you’re trying to go.
If you forget a card or are relying solely on public transport, try to remember something big around your hotel ie mall, major restaurant, school, monument, etc.  Often times, people won’t remember the location of a specific hotel but can easily get you in the general vicinity to a popular destination or landmark.  And no, remembering the closest McDonalds or Starbucks doesn’t count.
