So obviously I’m a little late to the party but it hasn’t been for a lack of planning. Usually the problem isn’t figuring out how to get to a destination but when and where. Trying to juggle my time off work with where I can realistically go is the biggest challenge.
So, to start the year off, I’m going to hopefully do a bucket list item and see the aurora. I’m planning to be up in the Lapland, Finland area in the middle of February in the Inari region of Finland. I’d read that the further north you go, the better your chances of seeing the aurora so although initially I had planned to go Rovaniemi but thought if I missed the lights because I was too south, I would never forgive myself for being that close and not going further north. Now, I have to figure out what clothes to wear since I don’t really want to buy an entirely new wardrobe just for a couple weeks (as I write, it’s about 68F or 20C outside in San Diego) so cold isn’t the type of weather I’m used to. I know seeing the aurora is dependent on the weather so fingers crossed….
For an April trip, I think it’d be really nice to do a quick trip south to Belize. I’ve wanted to see the ruins around the San Ignacio area and I’d hopefully have time to do a quick trip over to Tikal as well. I’m not sure when shoulder season is in Belize so I’m hoping whenever I decide to go, there won’t be too many tourists.
The rest of the year hasn’t materialized at all. I’d love to FINALLY make it to India even though that would take a substantially longer vacation. Also, I may see something that looks interesting and decide I’d like to check it out on a whim. One of the things I’ve always wanted to see is the Monaco Grand Prix so maybe this is the year!
If you have any thoughts or suggestions, please let me know and happy travels!
