Review: St. George Hotel – Helsinki

A review of the St. George Hotel in Helsinki located a block off the main street of shops and restaurants and a 15 min walk to the harbor.

I stayed for 2 nights at the St. George hotel and it was different for sure.  The hotel has an odd layout that isn’t very traditional and the rooms are also an odd size.  I’m not sure what the building was before it was converted into a hotel but it’s just an odd space.

My room had a nice bed with a small desk and good size bathroom.  It’s difficult to describe because all the essentials were there but the room somehow felt small and cramped.

The location was fantastic however and it was located right off the tram line a well as within walking distance of the harbor, main train station, and main shopping avenue.  It was about a 15 min walk to the main cathedral and about a 5 min walk from the train station. From the ferry dock, it was about a 15 min tram ride.

The one thing I did appreciate was that instead of a coffee machine in the room, they had a soda stream machine.  I think I would have appreciated it more in the summer vs. the winter but I thought it was a nice change from the usual coffee machine.

Overall, it’s a nice hotel.  But the layout is just difficult to describe.  The rooms felt tiny and cramped. I only travel with 2 carry on bags but I didn’t feel like I had an appropriate place to put my main luggage bag.  I’m also a guy who enjoys having a work desk so having a fairly large desk is pretty important but the desk in the room seemed like it belonged in a kid’s classroom.
